Surprisingly Peaceful Sadness

Sometimes we do not know why people are in our lives. We don't always get along with them,  but you are glad when they are there. We love them for who they are because they do not pretend to be someone else. Through thick and thin they are beside you, experiencing each step with you. You go out of your way to help make the bad good, and the good, better. They have been in your life for many years, showing up at times you needed a friend most, not knowing you needed a friend. Through tribulations, drama, school, kids, marriage, divorce, good, bad, right, and wrong, they are there. Then one day, they are gone. Their purpose filled.

Today I found out we (friends and family) lost a very close friend I (personally) have known for over 20 years, since he was in junior high school. I've watched him grow up, over all these years, into a man. His passing was very unexpected; I just saw him two days ago. I met up with him to pick up the Christmas gift he got for my son. He passed in his sleep peacefully. Peace was not something his life came across frequently. He had a very, very hard life, but he managed to always keep a smile on his face. He defined the word "friend". Although we did not see him everyday, or every week, when we did see him, there was family love. Without fail.

I did not always agree with his way of thinking or his actions. Sometimes I was downright against it, but it didn't matter. The love was there, no matter what. He would appear at just the right time with just the right thing. He never looked for anything in return. What he got was one of the most solid friendships I have ever had. I watched him be the best friend a person could be to my other half. The two of them were remarkable. They taught me what it was like to have a real friendship. To be able to take the good with the bad and keep the love in tact.

I am truly going to miss him. He's relaxing now, and that is the best place for him, now that it has happened. Most times we do not choose death as a peaceful option, and he did not make the choice. However, in his case, he now has the peace that didn't enter into his life before. Enjoy your peace, friend...
